9 Features to Look for in Independent Living for Seniors

Top Features to Find

Independent living for seniors is an excellent option for older adults looking for a sense of community in their retirement. Senior living facilities support many aspects of daily life, such as transportation, meal preparation, and home maintenance, while empowering residents to maintain as much independence as possible as they age.

There is a wide range of options for independent living for seniors, so it’s essential to search carefully for the one that best suits your or your loved one’s needs. Suppose you’re planning on moving to an independent living community. In that case, creating a list of the senior care amenities that are most important to you is helpful. Here are some of the key features to look for when exploring independent living in OKC:

Safety and Security Measures

Safety is a major concern for many seniors. You can establish peace of mind by looking for secure senior communities with multiple locked doors, access codes, or security guards. Some communities even include emergency response for seniors in their monthly fees. If you or your loved one is at risk of falling or suffering a medical emergency, these systems can help you feel more safe and secure.

Comfortable Living Spaces

The apartment is one of the biggest deciding factors when looking for independent living for seniors. Your retirement community should offer senior-friendly apartments with accessible living spaces so that you can easily navigate your home without assistance. Apartments with lots of natural light are especially good for senior wellness. You should have plenty of space for your belongings but not feel overwhelmed by the upkeep.

In addition to comfortable senior homes, the best senior living facilities also have cozy communal spaces where you can socialize with other residents. Connecting with your neighbors is one of the greatest benefits of independent living for seniors, so your senior community should have plenty of shared spaces for you to meet others.

Healthcare Services and Support

Healthcare management is an important consideration for most seniors when looking for an independent senior community. Even if you have few medical concerns upon moving in, you want to know you’ll be safe and supported should your health worsen. When touring an independent living community, ask about their senior healthcare services.

Many retirement communities have nurses or physicians on staff who can make house calls for urgent medical needs. On-site medical support is particularly valuable for seniors who don’t drive or have difficulty getting to medical appointments. Some communities also offer medication management for seniors, which can be incredibly helpful if you have prescriptions.

Community and Social Engagement at Independent Living for Seniors

Senior community engagement is paramount to many adults seeking independent living in OKC. Loneliness and isolation are serious problems affecting your physical and mental health. The best retirement communities have a full calendar of diverse social activities for seniors. Games, music, exercise, and crafts can all be great ways to bring older adults together and add more structure and enrichment to each day.

Senior group outings are also an excellent opportunity for residents to access their community. Some independent living facilities provide transportation to the mall, movie theater, or special community events. Regular outings add more variety to your schedule and can help you stay active.

Nutritious Dining Options in Independent Living for Seniors

Nutrition is another important factor when considering independent living for seniors. In some communities, residents are responsible for grocery shopping and meal preparation. Others have kitchen staff who prepare and deliver nutritious senior meals three times daily. Suppose you struggle to cook healthy meals or aren’t interested in spending your time in the kitchen. In that case, a community offering senior nutrition services is a great choice.

It’s also important to look for a facility equipped to make dietary accommodations for seniors. If you have food allergies, sensitivities, or a prescribed diet, make sure the kitchen can support those needs and restrictions.

Housekeeping and Maintenance

Most ideal senior care options offer some housekeeping and home maintenance support. Cleaning services can be very helpful for aging adults with joint pain or limited mobility who may struggle with strenuous household tasks. Senior living cleanliness is important for mental and physical health, so consider looking for communities that offer weekly housekeeping services. Senior laundry services can be valuable as well.

Transportation Services

Some independent living residents have their own vehicles and can run errands, visit family and friends, and access their community whenever they want. Others need more support with transportation. Suppose you don’t have your own reliable means of transportation. In that case, you should seek an independent living facility with senior transportation services.

Many programs for independent living for seniors will allow residents to schedule rides to run errands or attend healthcare appointments. Some also offer group transport for seniors to specific locations on a scheduled basis. Accessible senior transit encourages residents to leave the house, socialize, and take advantage of all their community offers.

Fitness and Wellness Facilities

If you’re an active adult, look for a senior community that offers fitness and wellness services. Many independent living for seniors facilities have a fitness center, pool, tennis court, walking trails, and other amenities that promote physical activity. Some also run workout classes and senior fitness programs, which provide a structured and social way to increase your fitness.

Health and wellness involve more than exercise, too. Other wellness activities for seniors include meditation, support groups, and social gatherings. Some communities even offer senior spa services to promote physical and mental relaxation.

Supportive Staff and Services in Independent Living for Seniors

The employees of a senior community can make a huge difference in your overall experience as a resident. The best facilities have friendly, compassionate, and supportive staff ready to provide support. The team will provide senior care services for aging adults who need extra assistance with housekeeping, meal preparation, personal care, and other tasks. When exploring your options, pay close attention to the staff and whether they enjoy working in independent living for seniors.

Tips to Downsize & Move to a Senior Living Community

Downsizing & Moving to Senior Living

How to Move to a Senior Living Community

Ready to transition your home from your current residence to a senior living community? Moving to a senior community marks an exciting new chapter in life free of home maintenance, offering a range of amenities and support tailored to older adults’ needs.

However, addressing practical aspects such as downsizing, creating a schedule, and cleaning out your old house is crucial before undertaking this transition. Thankfully our team here at Saint Ann Independent Living in OKC has created a sweeping guide to help you steer this expedition to your new senior living community so you can have a  better quality of life.

How Do You Downsize to Move to Senior Living?

Moving can often be time-consuming and chaotic, requiring careful decision-making regarding which belongings to bring and which to part with. We recommend that you begin the planning and organizing early. Start by evaluating each item’s practicality and sentimental value and how it will function in your new space. Remember, it’s important to be critical of each belonging.

An organized approach can be adopted by initially focusing on a specific room, such as the garage, and then tackling each room individually. It’s helpful to categorize your possessions into different groups, such as “keep,” “donate,” “sell,” “pass down,” or “discard.” Consider what items can be handed down to family members and what can be let go of, as this will ease your move to a new senior living community.

What to Move to a Senior Living Community

To know what you can bring, get measurements of your new possible home. That way, you can plan accordingly. Additionally, be sure to clarify everything included in your new home.
Ask about amenities; this may help you understand what toiletries, accessories, and furniture you need.
Ask if you will have your own kitchen.
Ask if you will need kitchenware.
These are the perfect types of questions to ask before you move to a senior living community.

What to Take When You Move to a Senior Living Community

When transitioning to an independent senior living community, it’s generally a good idea to bring the following items:

Bring clothing of all kinds. Clothing for comfy days. Clothing for formal events and themed events. Request an events calendar from your senior living community, so you can better prepare.

Bring your favorite furniture if you’re moving to an unfurnished community or prefer your own furnishings. Bring your favorite sofa, chairs, end tables, and a nightstand to create a cozy and familiar living space in your new home.

If necessary, bring your cherished dishes, glasses, and cutlery to maintain a sense of familiarity during meal times.

Personal Keepsakes

Consider bringing beloved keepsakes and knick-knacks that hold sentimental value.

Framed Photos & Artwork

Surround yourself with the people and memories that matter most by bringing framed photos and artwork.

  1. Research senior living communities: Before talking to your parents about senior living, research the available options in your area, and consider which type of community best fits your parent’s current and future needs.
  2. Ask them questions: You can even ask leading questions before you talk to your parents about transitioning to senior living. Ask them how it’s been keeping up with the house. Is there anything you can do to help? Their answers could provide a deeper insight into their needs.
  3. The benefits of a retirement community: Before talking to your parents about senior living, research the benefits of living in a retirement community and how it can enhance their quality of life. Highlight the social activities, amenities, and services that may interest them and make their daily lives more comfortable and enjoyable.
  4. The cost of living in a retirement community: Moving to a retirement community is a significant financial decision and honest conversation about the costs involved is crucial. Research different types of communities, and gather information on the fees and services included in each senior living center. Discuss the impact on your parent’s finances, and explore financing options if necessary.
  5. Your parents’ wishes and concerns: Listen to your parent’s wishes, concerns, and reservations when talking to your parents about senior living. Address their fears and uncertainties about moving to a senior living center with patience and empathy, and work together to find solutions that address their concerns.

Tips For A Helpful Conversation About Senior Care

When talking to your parents about senior living & senior health care, it’s essential to approach the conversation with sensitivity, empathy, and patience. This conversation can be difficult and emotional for both parties involved. Still, it’s crucial to have it sooner rather than later to ensure your parents receive the best care as they age.

Here are five tips to help you have a helpful conversation about aging care with your parents:

  1. Be patient: Talking to your parents about senior living can be tricky and emotional. Be patient and allow your parents the time they need to process and come to terms with the information and options presented to them. Avoid pressuring them into making decisions and respect their autonomy and preferences.
  2. Involve other family members: Involve other family members in the conversation, especially if they have a close relationship with your parents. Sharing communication can ease the burden of responsibility and provide additional support and input. Remember that this conversation concerns not just you and your elderly parents but the entire family’s well-being.
  3. Start the conversation early: Don’t wait to talk to your parents about senior living until a crisis occurs. Start the conversation early so everyone involved has enough time to explore all the options and make informed decisions.
  4. Listen with empathy: Listen attentively to your parents’ concerns, wishes, and fears about aging and their health care. Be empathetic and validate their feelings.
  5. Keep an open mind: Be open-minded and flexible, and explore all the available possibilities for aging care. Refrain from dismissing any options before fully considering their advantages and disadvantages.

Benefits of an Active Senior Living Retirement Center

Does the world encourage active senior living enough? Everyone encourages kids to stay active. There’s a PE class in elementary school. Many parents put their children into sports. Even the NFL has the Play 60 campaign to encourage kids to get at least sixty minutes of daily activity.

When kids grow up, that encouragement stops. But the benefits of an active lifestyle never go away. Staying active gets more vital as you age.

For seniors, staying active can be one of the most critical things you can do to stay healthy and happy.

Here at Saint Ann Retirement Center, we encourage all residents who can stay active, to do so. We offer a wide array of amenities and activities to promote active senior living.

Given the importance of staying active, Saint Ann makes it a priority to help residents stay engaged both mentally and physically at our senior living facility.

Why are activities important for seniors?

Activities that Prevent Disease

Activity improves your immune system. For many seniors, their immune system declines with age. Active senior living helps keep it strong.

With a stronger immune system, your body can fight off illnesses like the common cold, the flu, and even COVID-19.

Activity can mitigate other ailments like heart disease or diabetes. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S., with seniors impacted the most. Staying active can drastically lower your odds of death from heart disease.

Staying active doesn’t mean you have to get up and run miles and miles or lift heavy weights in the gym. Activity can mean walking laps around a track. It can mean stretching in the morning. It can even mean doing band exercises!

Active senior living will keep you strong against disease and illness.

Activities that Help Manage Body Weight

Our metabolisms grow slower with age. Regular activity keeps our metabolism high, helping our bodies burn fat and retain muscle.

Activities that Improve Mental Health

Physical activity is excellent for your mental health. Getting active releases endorphins or hormones that make you feel good. These can relieve stress and help you feel happy.

Activity can also help you sleep well! Sleep and general rest are essential for seniors, who are often prone to insomnia and other sleep-related issues.

Activities that Lessen Fall Damage

Young folks can fall and bounce back up as if nothing happened. But their weaker bones can break when seniors fall, even from a small height. Large bones like hips and femurs are at particular risk during falls.

But regular activity can keep your bones strong! Activity also keeps your muscles strong, which may prevent you from falling in the first place!

Activities that Get You Social

Activity, especially in a senior living center, almost always occurs in groups!

Here at Saint Ann, we offer loads of wellness activities designed to promote socialization and active senior living. You can make new friends and get to know your fellow residents better through active senior living.

Staying social is great for your brain, especially for those getting older. Meaningful relationships give us purpose, motivate us, fight against feelings of loneliness and depression, and keep us mentally sharp.

If you do activities with people you like, it will feel like fun and less like work!

Activities that Improve Brain Function

Many studies have suggested that adults who exercise regularly have a lower risk of dementia.

And don’t think that if you start now, then it’s too late. The same studies also suggest that it doesn’t matter when you begin a fitness routine, as long as you start one!

active senior living. seniors doing yoga. What kind of exercises are best for seniors?

    • Yoga is an excellent exercise for active senior living! It’s a low-impact exercise that’s easy on your joints. It helps build core strength and increase flexibility. These benefits will help keep you strong and safe!

    • If able, aerobic exercises are great at building stamina and heart health. It also strengthens the lungs. Aerobic exercise can mean a lot of different things. Walking, swimming, biking, and even table tennis or pickle-ball count as aerobics.

Strength Training

    • Weightlifting doesn’t have to mean stepping into a squat rack. But lifting weights, even five pounds or less, can drastically slow down muscle loss and keep body fat low.
    • Muscle loss is a big issue for seniors, which is part of why mobility becomes poor and falls become dangerous. So weightlifting, even a little bit, can pay huge dividends later in life.

Who can benefit from Saint Ann’s Activities?

If you’re interested in assisted or independent living, then Saint Ann Retirement Center would make a great home for you.

But what’s the difference between assisted living and independent living?

Independent Living

Independent living is for healthy seniors who still live independently but want the safety and sociability of living with fellow seniors and staff members. In addition, seniors find it exciting to live in a community where they can interact with their peers.

You can make your daily decisions at an independent living facility without the hassle of chores like housekeeping, grocery shopping, lawn care, and home maintenance.

Delicious meals are prepared daily for your convenience. However, apartments come with kitchenettes, making it possible to cook meals when you’d like!

Daily medical and personal care differs for assisted and independent living residents. For independent living, medical and personal care is provided by your choice of home health companies whenever needed or requested. Independence is the top priority for our independent living residents.

Assisted Living

Assisted living is for those who want personal care and other support in a home-like setting. Those in assisted living get help from staff when needed and get services at their request.

Assisted living also gives residents an environment where they can be social at their own pace. Someone who wants to be around people their age would greatly benefit from assisted living.

Why should you choose assisted living?

    • It provides a safe environment for seniors with limited mobility or medical conditions that require assistance.
    • It fosters socialization opportunities for seniors to thrive.
    • Help and medical personnel are available.
    • Delicious, healthy meals are prepared to support the immune system and maintain overall wellness.
    • Transportation is provided to help seniors maintain their independence.
