9 Features to Look for in Independent Living for Seniors

Top Features to Find

Independent living for seniors is an excellent option for older adults looking for a sense of community in their retirement. Senior living facilities support many aspects of daily life, such as transportation, meal preparation, and home maintenance, while empowering residents to maintain as much independence as possible as they age.

There is a wide range of options for independent living for seniors, so it’s essential to search carefully for the one that best suits your or your loved one’s needs. Suppose you’re planning on moving to an independent living community. In that case, creating a list of the senior care amenities that are most important to you is helpful. Here are some of the key features to look for when exploring independent living in OKC:

Safety and Security Measures

Safety is a major concern for many seniors. You can establish peace of mind by looking for secure senior communities with multiple locked doors, access codes, or security guards. Some communities even include emergency response for seniors in their monthly fees. If you or your loved one is at risk of falling or suffering a medical emergency, these systems can help you feel more safe and secure.

Comfortable Living Spaces

The apartment is one of the biggest deciding factors when looking for independent living for seniors. Your retirement community should offer senior-friendly apartments with accessible living spaces so that you can easily navigate your home without assistance. Apartments with lots of natural light are especially good for senior wellness. You should have plenty of space for your belongings but not feel overwhelmed by the upkeep.

In addition to comfortable senior homes, the best senior living facilities also have cozy communal spaces where you can socialize with other residents. Connecting with your neighbors is one of the greatest benefits of independent living for seniors, so your senior community should have plenty of shared spaces for you to meet others.

Healthcare Services and Support

Healthcare management is an important consideration for most seniors when looking for an independent senior community. Even if you have few medical concerns upon moving in, you want to know you’ll be safe and supported should your health worsen. When touring an independent living community, ask about their senior healthcare services.

Many retirement communities have nurses or physicians on staff who can make house calls for urgent medical needs. On-site medical support is particularly valuable for seniors who don’t drive or have difficulty getting to medical appointments. Some communities also offer medication management for seniors, which can be incredibly helpful if you have prescriptions.

Community and Social Engagement at Independent Living for Seniors

Senior community engagement is paramount to many adults seeking independent living in OKC. Loneliness and isolation are serious problems affecting your physical and mental health. The best retirement communities have a full calendar of diverse social activities for seniors. Games, music, exercise, and crafts can all be great ways to bring older adults together and add more structure and enrichment to each day.

Senior group outings are also an excellent opportunity for residents to access their community. Some independent living facilities provide transportation to the mall, movie theater, or special community events. Regular outings add more variety to your schedule and can help you stay active.

Nutritious Dining Options in Independent Living for Seniors

Nutrition is another important factor when considering independent living for seniors. In some communities, residents are responsible for grocery shopping and meal preparation. Others have kitchen staff who prepare and deliver nutritious senior meals three times daily. Suppose you struggle to cook healthy meals or aren’t interested in spending your time in the kitchen. In that case, a community offering senior nutrition services is a great choice.

It’s also important to look for a facility equipped to make dietary accommodations for seniors. If you have food allergies, sensitivities, or a prescribed diet, make sure the kitchen can support those needs and restrictions.

Housekeeping and Maintenance

Most ideal senior care options offer some housekeeping and home maintenance support. Cleaning services can be very helpful for aging adults with joint pain or limited mobility who may struggle with strenuous household tasks. Senior living cleanliness is important for mental and physical health, so consider looking for communities that offer weekly housekeeping services. Senior laundry services can be valuable as well.

Transportation Services

Some independent living residents have their own vehicles and can run errands, visit family and friends, and access their community whenever they want. Others need more support with transportation. Suppose you don’t have your own reliable means of transportation. In that case, you should seek an independent living facility with senior transportation services.

Many programs for independent living for seniors will allow residents to schedule rides to run errands or attend healthcare appointments. Some also offer group transport for seniors to specific locations on a scheduled basis. Accessible senior transit encourages residents to leave the house, socialize, and take advantage of all their community offers.

Fitness and Wellness Facilities

If you’re an active adult, look for a senior community that offers fitness and wellness services. Many independent living for seniors facilities have a fitness center, pool, tennis court, walking trails, and other amenities that promote physical activity. Some also run workout classes and senior fitness programs, which provide a structured and social way to increase your fitness.

Health and wellness involve more than exercise, too. Other wellness activities for seniors include meditation, support groups, and social gatherings. Some communities even offer senior spa services to promote physical and mental relaxation.

Supportive Staff and Services in Independent Living for Seniors

The employees of a senior community can make a huge difference in your overall experience as a resident. The best facilities have friendly, compassionate, and supportive staff ready to provide support. The team will provide senior care services for aging adults who need extra assistance with housekeeping, meal preparation, personal care, and other tasks. When exploring your options, pay close attention to the staff and whether they enjoy working in independent living for seniors.

Tips to Downsize & Move to a Senior Living Community

Downsizing & Moving to Senior Living

How to Move to a Senior Living Community

Ready to transition your home from your current residence to a senior living community? Moving to a senior community marks an exciting new chapter in life free of home maintenance, offering a range of amenities and support tailored to older adults’ needs.

However, addressing practical aspects such as downsizing, creating a schedule, and cleaning out your old house is crucial before undertaking this transition. Thankfully our team here at Saint Ann Independent Living in OKC has created a sweeping guide to help you steer this expedition to your new senior living community so you can have a  better quality of life.

How Do You Downsize to Move to Senior Living?

Moving can often be time-consuming and chaotic, requiring careful decision-making regarding which belongings to bring and which to part with. We recommend that you begin the planning and organizing early. Start by evaluating each item’s practicality and sentimental value and how it will function in your new space. Remember, it’s important to be critical of each belonging.

An organized approach can be adopted by initially focusing on a specific room, such as the garage, and then tackling each room individually. It’s helpful to categorize your possessions into different groups, such as “keep,” “donate,” “sell,” “pass down,” or “discard.” Consider what items can be handed down to family members and what can be let go of, as this will ease your move to a new senior living community.

Downsize and move to a senior living community at Saint Ann Oklahoma City

What to Move to a Senior Living Community

To know what you can bring, get measurements of your new possible home. That way, you can plan accordingly. Additionally, be sure to clarify everything included in your new home.
Ask about amenities; this may help you understand what toiletries, accessories, and furniture you need.
Ask if you will have your own kitchen.
Ask if you will need kitchenware.
These are the perfect types of questions to ask before you move to a senior living community.

What to Take When You Move to a Senior Living Community

When transitioning to an independent senior living community, it’s generally a good idea to bring the following items:

Clothing

Bring clothing of all kinds. Clothing for comfy days. Clothing for formal events and themed events. Request an events calendar from your senior living community, so you can better prepare.

Furniture

Bring your favorite furniture if you’re moving to an unfurnished community or prefer your own furnishings. Bring your favorite sofa, chairs, end tables, and a nightstand to create a cozy and familiar living space in your new home.

Kitchenware

If necessary, bring your cherished dishes, glasses, and cutlery to maintain a sense of familiarity during meal times.

Personal Keepsakes

Consider bringing beloved keepsakes and knick-knacks that hold sentimental value.

Framed Photos & Artwork

Surround yourself with the people and memories that matter most by bringing framed photos and artwork.

While you may feel uneasy or unsure about broaching this topic, it’s important not to dodge it entirely but not to approach it too hastily.

How can you initiate this discussion?

What To Do When Aging Parents Can’t Live Alone?

Starting a conversation about senior care with your aging parents can be intimidating, and feeling anxious or fearful of being misunderstood is normal. However, it’s essential to start this discussion as soon as possible. Understanding senior living options can be a complex process, so it’s crucial to be proactive and address any concerns or red flags that may arise.

As an older adult but also a child, it’s important to approach challenging conversations with patience, understanding, and compassion. It may take your parents some time to understand the aging parent’s adult children dynamic better.

Tips For A Helpful Conversation About Senior Care

When talking to your parents about senior living & senior health care, it’s essential to approach the conversation with sensitivity, empathy, and patience. Senior Living Buy-In vs Monthly Rent: Explained

Our monthly senior living fee covers everything from restaurant-style meals to engaging social activities and round-the-clock care. Uncover the many benefits of choosing Saint Ann as your next home and better understand the differences between senior living buy-in vs monthly rent.

Senior Living Buy-In vs Monthly Rent

Our all-inclusive care program provides residents with everything they need to enjoy a fulfilling and worry-free life without breaking the bank.

Saint Ann has no wait list and immediate availability. So come by and check us out!

What Is a Monthly Senior Living Community?

Residents in a monthly fee-based senior living community pay a monthly rental fee according to the level of care required. A monthly fee is the most inexpensive senior living option.

In addition, it allows for flexibility in the time of stay and type of stay. Paying a monthly fee covers all your monthly living expenses included in your level of care. Residents pay a lump sum on top of monthly fees for living expenses in senior living buy-in vs monthly rent, which only requires the monthly payment.

What Is A Buy-In Senior Living Community?

Which one benefits me more, senior living buy-in vs monthly rent? A buy-in senior living community is a type of senior community where residents pay a one-time entrance fee, known as a “buy-in fee,” to occupy a unit within their senior living community. This fee is a large lump sum that may or may not be refundable depending on the terms of the agreement.

senior living buy-in vs monthly rent what's the difference?

In addition to the buy-in fee, residents may pay a monthly fee that covers living expenses such as rent, utilities, meals, housekeeping, and transportation. The monthly fee may also increase over time to account for inflation and other factors. In short, a buy-in senior living community payment system mixes a one-time buy-in fee with ongoing monthly fees.

What Are The Benefits Of Monthly Rent For Senior Living?

A monthly rent option provides greater flexibility and peace of mind. Removing any confusion around what you’re paying for. Providing benefits such as:

Flexible and Manageable Payments

Instead of paying a large lump sum upfront, monthly rent allows residents to pay for their senior living expenses as they go. In addition, a monthly model provides greater peace of mind and financial flexibility, particularly if the resident’s situation or needs change over time.

Short-Term Stays

Suppose the need for a short-term stay arises due to rehabilitation or temporary relocation. In that case, the monthly rent option can be more beneficial than a buy-in fee. Additionally, suppose your home becomes temporarily unlivable due to fire, plumbing, pest problems, or other unforeseen circumstances. In that case, you can find a temporary home at Saint Ann without incurring any significant financial loss.

Ability to Relocate

Rental senior living communities also provide flexibility for relocation if a resident wants to be closer to family or friends without losing significant money. This flexibility keeps you from being tied down to any given location.

Overall when you look at senior living buy-in vs monthly rent senior living, the monthly rent option provides greater financial stability and ease for senior living residents, offering a flexible and manageable payment structure to meet their needs.
